Royal Caribbean’s return to South Africa sells out ahead of Voyager of the Seas arrival

Royal Caribbean International will make its first passenger call to South Africa in more than a decade this November, with Voyager of the Seas already sold out amid strong global demand for cruising in the region.

The ship is currently on a repositioning voyage between Barcelona and Singapore and will call at Walvis Bay on 10 November, Cape Town on 14 November and Port Elizabeth on 16 November, before continuing to Mauritius on 21 November.

A milestone return to South African waters

The visit marks the cruise line’s first passenger sailing in South Africa since the 2011/2012 summer season, when Rhapsody of the Seas operated from local ports. More recently, Serenade of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas docked in Cape Town in 2024 for technical stops during global itineraries but without guests on board.

Voyager of the Seas’ arrival signals the brand’s gradual return to southern African waters and renewed interest in the destination as a key cruising hub.

Renewed confidence in Africa’s cruise potential

Cruises International, Royal Caribbean’s South African representative, says the visit marks an important step in rebuilding confidence in the region’s cruise market. CEO Marco Cristofolli described it as a milestone moment for both the brand and the local industry.

“This is more than a port call — it’s a statement,” he said.

“It demonstrates global confidence in the market and opens opportunities for leisure, business and incentive travel that combine adventure and connection.”

A sold-out success story

The six-night voyage has sold out well ahead of schedule, reflecting strong consumer appetite for cruises featuring South African ports. According to Cruises International’s Head of Commercial, Jacqui Mabuza, the response shows the region’s growing appeal to international travellers.

“As Voyager of the Seas continues east, she will embark on a rare Royal Caribbean itinerary, and the sold-out sailing is proof of the strong global demand for Africa as a destination,” she said.

A new chapter for South African cruising

The return of Voyager of the Seas adds to growing momentum for South Africa’s cruise tourism industry, positioning the country as a vital link between the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Indian Ocean routes. While Royal Caribbean has not yet confirmed regular deployments in the region, its renewed presence reflects the increasing global recognition of South Africa as a world-class cruising destination.
