Atlas Ocean Voyages adds Cape Town sailings for new expedition yacht

Atlas Ocean Voyages will include Cape Town across multiple itineraries in the inaugural 2028/29 season of its new expedition yacht, Atlas Adventurer, as the line expands into Africa and the Indian Ocean.

The deployment positions Cape Town as both a turnaround port and key link in a broader network of voyages connecting East Africa, the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean.

Cape Town anchors Africa itineraries

Atlas Adventurer is scheduled to call in Cape Town in March and April 2029, featuring in several core itineraries during its first season.

These include a 14-night Swahili Coast sailing from Mombasa to Cape Town departing 24 March 2029, followed by a return 14-night Cape Currents & Safari Shores voyage from Cape Town to Mombasa on 7 April 2029.

The city will also serve as the departure point for a 45-night Silk & Sands Passage voyage from Cape Town to Athens, highlighting its role as a major embarkation hub for long-haul expedition cruising.

Newbuild signals expansion into emerging regions

The itineraries form part of Atlas Ocean Voyages’ first major expansion into Asia, the Indian Ocean and Africa, with the vessel set to debut in Asia before repositioning west.

“This inaugural season is a defining moment for Atlas Ocean Voyages,” said president and CEO James A. Rodriguez, noting the focus on immersive, culturally rich journeys.

The move reflects growing cruise industry interest in Africa as operators seek alternatives to more saturated expedition markets in Europe and polar regions.

Luxury expedition yacht targets high-end travellers

Scheduled to launch in 2028, Atlas Adventurer will accommodate up to 400 guests and is positioned as a luxury expedition sailing yacht.

The all-suite vessel will feature 200 suites across multiple categories, alongside design elements inspired by classic ocean liners.

Sustainability features include hybrid propulsion, dual-fuel capability and a carbon-fibre sailing rig, supporting reduced fuel consumption and emissions.

Trade opportunities in long-haul cruise itineraries

For Australian advisors, the deployment opens up early planning opportunities for high-value cruise clients, particularly those seeking extended, destination-led itineraries.

Cape Town’s inclusion across multiple voyages also creates strong potential for pre- and post-cruise land packages, including safaris and regional touring.

As expedition cruising continues to evolve, Africa is emerging as a key growth region, with increased deployment and more diverse itinerary options entering the market.
