Awehness Travel launches conservation and adventure programme in Eastern Cape

Awehness Travel has developed Aweh-Lending a Helping Hand, an eight-week conservation, community and adventure programme based in Gqeberha on South Africa’s Eastern Cape coast. A confirmed departure runs from 20 June to 14 August 2027, though the operator says the programme can run at other times of year subject to availability and minimum numbers.

The programme is aimed at gap-year students, university students, conservation and wildlife enthusiasts, aspiring marine biologists and travellers seeking an extended, purpose-driven stay, rather than a standard holiday itinerary. Groups are kept small, with a minimum of two and maximum of 20 participants.

Programme combines diving, conservation and cultural experiences

Over the eight weeks, participants complete a PADI Open Water certification, spend a week engaged in community projects, and work six weeks with critically endangered African penguins through Awehness’ conservation partners.

Marine and adventure components include an eco-friendly catamaran safari and guided open-water swimming, alongside a full-day Big Five safari. Cultural inclusions cover the operator’s Aweh Deep Roots Township Experience and a jewellery-making workshop with a local artisan.

Accommodation and ongoing local support are included for the full eight weeks.

Trade opportunity still in development

Awehness Travel says it is building its supplier and experience network around the programme and is seeking to work with trusted local businesses and operators. Advisors interested in offering the programme to gap-year, university or conservation-minded clients should contact Awehness Travel directly to discuss availability, group departures and commercial terms, as pricing was not supplied.
