Bawe Island marine reserve to protect Zanzibar’s coral reefs

Bawe Island by The Cocoon Collection, Zanzibar’s only five-star resort offering the exclusive one island, one resort concept, has unveiled a new marine reserve aimed at preserving the island’s vibrant ecosystem. In collaboration with the Zanzibar government, the Changuu-Bawe Marine Conservation Area has been established to safeguard the stunning coral reefs and diverse marine life surrounding Bawe Island.

Protecting the marine ecosystem

The new conservation area prohibits fishing within its protected waters, allowing the coral reef to regenerate naturally and promoting the repopulation of marine species. This initiative not only enhances the biodiversity of the underwater environment but also fosters a balanced and thriving ecosystem.

“Bawe Island is for us the realisation of a dream: a place where luxury and sustainability meet in perfect balance,” said Attilio Azzola, Founder and Corporate Sales Manager of The Cocoon Collection.

“For years we have been working on several fronts to reduce our impact and enhance the environment that surrounds us. This new initiative represents a step further in our vision of sustainable development, because we firmly believe that luxury and respect for nature can, and must coexist.”

A holistic approach to sustainability

The marine reserve is just one part of Bawe Island’s broader sustainability strategy. The resort operates Zanzibar’s largest solar power plant, uses advanced water desalination and wastewater recycling systems, and supports conservation projects such as protecting century-old turtles on nearby Prison Island.

In addition to environmental initiatives, The Cocoon Collection is investing in the local community. Modern homes with private boat docks are being built for local fishermen, allowing them to reach authorised fishing zones outside the protected area. This model of coexistence between luxury tourism and sustainable development not only preserves local traditions but also contributes to the economic well-being of the community.

An exclusive and eco-friendly escape

Located just a 15-minute boat ride from Stone Town, Bawe Island spans over 30 hectares of pristine nature. The resort features 70 luxury villas, each with a private garden, pool, and butler service with a personal chef. Guests seeking ultimate exclusivity can choose the 200-square-metre Sunrise Villa or the majestic Sultan Palace, which spans 500 square metres over two levels and accommodates up to nine adults.

Beyond the resort, visitors can explore Zanzibar’s natural and cultural wonders, including the Jozani Forest, ancient Stone Town, Prison Island, and spice tours—all of which pair perfectly with a Tanzanian safari adventure.

Bawe Island by The Cocoon Collection sets a benchmark for how luxury tourism can harmoniously coexist with sustainability, offering an exclusive sanctuary while contributing to environmental preservation and community development.
