Kenya has regained a sense of peace following President William Ruto’s decision to withdraw the contentious Finance Bill 2024/2025, which sparked widespread protests across the nation.
The bill, aimed at raising US$2.7 billion through increased taxes, faced vehement opposition from various sectors including tourism, prompting demonstrations and unfortunately, violence resulting in the loss of lives.
In a televised address on Wednesday evening, President Ruto acknowledged public outcry against the bill, stating, “Having reflected on the continuing conversation regarding the content of the finance bill 2024, and listening keenly to the people of Kenya who have said loudly that they want nothing to do with this Finance Bill 2024, I concede, and therefore I will not sign the 2024 finance bill.”
The Kenya Tourism Federation (KTF), representing the private sector in tourism, expressed relief at the withdrawal of the bill, noting that the situation in the country has stabilized. Fred Odek, Chairman of KTF, emphasized the peaceful nature of the demonstrations, despite unfortunate incidents of violence on June 25.
“While demonstrations occurred in urban centres, Kenya’s tourism sites and attractions remained unaffected,” reassured Odek. “Tourist circuits across the country have reported no incidents, and travel through airports, airstrips, and hotels continues seamlessly.”
Odek further assured travellers that the thousands currently visiting Kenya are safe and enjoying their vacations without disruption. He emphasized ongoing monitoring of the situation through the KTF-Safety Centre, ensuring real-time updates to maintain visitor confidence.
“The President has assured all stakeholders of restored security measures, echoed by leaders across the nation,” added Odek.
“We encourage travellers to stay informed through reliable sources and official channels, ensuring their visit to Kenya remains as enjoyable and memorable as ever.”
With calm restored and assurances in place, Kenya’s tourism sector looks forward to continuing to welcome visitors to its diverse and vibrant destinations, unaffected by recent events.
