The City of Cape Town has launched an innovative wine tourism guide, Wineland Wonders, making the region’s renowned wine estates and hidden gems more accessible than ever before.
The guide, which features detailed information about the city’s celebrated wine routes, was officially unveiled by James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth.
A Boost for Wine Tourism
The new guide is part of a broader strategy to promote wine tourism, one of the Western Cape’s largest economic drivers. Vos highlighted that the wine industry not only enhances the tourism experience but also plays a crucial role in job creation and economic development.
“Our world-class wines offer incredible value, not only to tourists but also as a key contributor to our local economy,” said Vos. “This guide will help more people discover the beauty of Cape Town’s wine farms, whether they’re first-time visitors or seasoned wine enthusiasts.”
Economic Impact of Wine Tourism
Wine tourism continues to be a major drawcard for the Western Cape, with the sector contributing R3.05 billion (€159 million) to South Africa’s economy in 2022, a significant increase from pre-pandemic figures. According to a study by the South African Wine Industry Information and Systems (SAWIS), the province’s wine industry generated over 245,000 jobs that year, with an impressive 3.36 jobs created for every R1 million (€52,300) invested—well above the national average.
“Our wines are not only award-winning but also essential for economic growth and job creation,” Vos added. “This guide will make it easier for both locals and tourists to explore Cape Town’s remarkable wine farms and contribute to the local economy.”
Exploring Cape Town’s Wine Routes

The Wineland Wonders guide provides detailed insights into 40 wine farms spread across three of the region’s iconic wine routes:
- Constantia Wine Route: Nestled in Cape Town’s southern suburbs, this historic wine region is known for its picturesque vineyards and high-quality wines.
- Helderberg: A sub-route of the Stellenbosch Wine Route, this region is famed for its diverse terroir and acclaimed wine estates.
- Durbanville Wine Valley: Just outside Cape Town, this area offers a blend of scenic beauty and exceptional wine experiences.
The guide is available via an interactive WhatsApp channel and integrates seamlessly with Google Maps, allowing users to easily navigate the wine routes, explore wine varietals, discover restaurant offerings, and enjoy the scenic beauty of the farms with just a few taps.
A Digital Experience at Your Fingertips
Vos emphasised the ease of use of the new guide: “With the Wineland Wonders guide, visitors and locals can dive into the city’s wine routes effortlessly. It’s all about making Cape Town’s wine culture more accessible and providing a rich experience for those exploring our stunning wine farms.”
The guide is expected to further enhance Cape Town’s appeal as a world-class destination for wine lovers, while supporting the continued growth of the region’s wine tourism industry.
