Desert & Delta Safaris launches ultra-trail adventure linking Botswana’s UNESCO sites

Desert & Delta Safaris has unveiled one of Botswana’s most ambitious new adventure experiences: a four-night, 100-kilometre ultra-trail journey connecting the Okavango Delta to the Tsodilo Hills. Launching 11 April 2026, the Okavango to Tsodilo Ultra-Trail offers trail runners and hikers a rare opportunity to traverse two UNESCO World Heritage Sites on foot.

A first-of-its-kind expedition through northern Botswana

Positioned as an immersive, small-group expedition rather than a race, the new itinerary is designed for travellers seeking a deeper, more physical connection with the landscape. After a year of route testing and terrain mapping, Desert & Delta Safaris has developed what it describes as one of the most exciting new ways to experience Botswana’s wilderness.

Set departures are confirmed for 11–15 April 2026 and 1–5 April 2027, with tailor-made private departures also available for running clubs, adventure groups or travellers who prefer to hike rather than run.

Trail highlights from Delta channels to ancient rock art

The route includes up to 100 kilometres of varied terrain, supported by expert trail-running guides, a qualified medic and refuelling points. Guests stay at Nxamaseri Island Lodge for three nights and spend one night at a specially created Tsodilo Hills Sleep-Out Expedition Camp hosted by the local San community.

Daily trail segments include:

  • The Water Route (30–35 km): The Okavango Panhandle, island forests, fishing villages and seasonal mokoro crossings
  • The Heritage Connector (40–45 km): Transition from Delta wetlands to Kalahari sand dunes, culminating at Tsodilo Hills with ancient rock-art exploration
  • The Summit Challenge (20–25 km): Tsodilo trails with an optional climb of Botswana’s highest peak, Male Hill
  • Recovery Day: Yoga, spa time, mokoro excursions and poolside relaxation before celebrating with fellow runners

Cultural connection is a core component, with guests meeting remote communities, experiencing a San “trance dance” interpretation and learning about the region’s spiritual heritage.

Adventure with community impact

Each trail supports local long-distance running development, helping to train and empower athletes in nearby communities. Participants will run alongside local community members, reinforcing the program’s commitment to social connection and shared achievement.

Post-trail safari options for a complete Botswana circuit

Advisors can package the ultra-trail with a suggested safari extension including:

  • Two nights’ acclimatisation in Maun
  • Four nights at Nxamaseri Island Lodge
  • Three nights at Camp Moremi or Camp Xakanaxa
  • Three nights at Savute Safari Lodge

This creates a broader itinerary combining wilderness adventure, cultural experiences and classic land-and-water safari across the Okavango and Chobe regions.

The ultra-trail is suitable for runners, trekkers and private groups, with the Okavango Panhandle route selected for its safety profile and low predator density. A comprehensive support team ensures safety, logistics and recovery throughout.
