Ethiopian Airlines launches direct Mauritius flights amid growing demand

Ethiopian Airlines has expanded its African network with the launch of a new direct service between Addis Ababa and Mauritius, strengthening connectivity to the Indian Ocean island as tourism demand continues to rise.

The route commenced on 12 July 2026 and will operate three times weekly, linking Mauritius to Ethiopian Airlines’ global network via its Addis Ababa hub.

Stronger connectivity supports tourism growth

The new service comes as Mauritius records steady tourism growth, with arrivals reaching 1,436,250 in 2025, up 3.9 per cent year on year, while air arrivals increased 4.7 per cent.

Improved air access remains a key focus for the Mauritian government in 2026, with the new route expected to support inbound tourism, trade and broader economic ties.

For the Australian travel trade, the additional connectivity provides more flexible routing options into Mauritius and the wider Indian Ocean region, particularly when combined with Ethiopian Airlines’ extensive long-haul network.

Strategic hub links global markets

By connecting through Addis Ababa, travellers gain access to a wide range of destinations across Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas.

Ethiopian Airlines Group chief executive officer Mesfin Tasew said the route strengthens the airline’s role in linking Africa with global markets.

“Mauritius is a destination of remarkable beauty, rich culture, and growing economic importance. By establishing a direct link between the country and our vast global network, we are pleased to offer convenient travel options while bringing the world closer to Mauritius,” he said.

Trade opportunities across Africa and Indian Ocean

The new service enhances Ethiopian Airlines’ positioning as a key pan-African carrier, supporting multi-destination itineraries that combine mainland Africa with Indian Ocean beach extensions.

For agents, this opens additional opportunities to package Mauritius alongside East and Southern Africa, particularly for clients seeking safari and beach combinations.

As demand for Africa and Indian Ocean travel continues to build, expanded air capacity and improved connectivity are expected to play a critical role in supporting future growth.
