Etihad extends Zanzibar flights as demand for Africa grows

Etihad Airways is increasing capacity across its global network, with extended services to Zanzibar highlighting sustained demand for Indian Ocean and East Africa travel among leisure and long-haul markets.

The airline has confirmed its seasonal Abu Dhabi–Zanzibar service will now operate until 31 March 2027, significantly extending the route beyond its previous September end date.

Zanzibar extension signals strong leisure demand

The decision to extend Zanzibar services reflects growing demand for beach and safari combinations, particularly from Europe, the Middle East and connecting markets such as Australia.

Operating four times weekly on an Airbus A320, the route strengthens access to Tanzania’s Indian Ocean coastline and complements established safari circuits across East Africa.

For the Australian trade, improved connectivity via Abu Dhabi creates additional opportunities to package Zanzibar with mainland Tanzania, including the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, or as a post-safari beach extension.

Broader network expansion supports connectivity

The Zanzibar extension forms part of a wider network update by Etihad, driven by strong demand across leisure, business and visiting friends and relatives (VFR) travel segments.

Key changes include increased frequencies to Brussels and Kraków, while the Abu Dhabi–Dhaka route will now operate year-round following strong initial demand.

Seasonal services to Palma de Mallorca have also been extended, reflecting continued strength in Mediterranean travel.

Etihad Airways Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer Arik De said demand had exceeded expectations across multiple markets, prompting the airline to add capacity where it is most needed.

Trade opportunities for Africa itineraries

For travel advisors, the extended Zanzibar service enhances flexibility when planning East Africa itineraries, particularly for clients seeking multi-stop journeys that combine wildlife, culture and coastal experiences.

The move also reinforces the growing importance of hub connectivity through the Middle East for Australian travellers heading to Africa, with airlines continuing to invest in routes that support long-haul leisure demand.

With increased frequency, longer operating windows and improved access, Zanzibar is set to remain a key component of East Africa itineraries into 2027.
