Tristan van Heteren is the sales manager for Jaci’s Lodges and an all-round decent guy. His personality and dedication to South Africa as a destination shone through at the South Africa Tourism Mega Lekker Famil in 2024, when his team, the Rhino Group, won the video challenge, which showcased some of Jaci’s Lodges offerings.
Tristan is someone you need to get to know, and here is why.
What is your job description and what does your role involve?
Since July 2022 I have taken over and look after the sales, marketing and reservations for Jaci’s Lodges. I also live on site which makes it very rewarding to be able to speak to our amazing guests from all over the world and understand how they heard about us and what drew them into Madikwe and the Lodge. I believe it is always great to spend some one on one time with the guests to hear about their stories and get a better understanding of the customer experience and what an African Safari means for different individuals.
Which parts of the travel industry do you work with?
Because of my role and being a small family run business, I have the privilege of working with most parts of the industry. We are consistently in talks with media/digital media, agents, operators and guests consistently looking at new business opportunities. It’s really nice to be able to see the whole process from start to finish and then to see the guests’ smiles on their faces once they arrive. It’s really nice to be able to see the whole process from start to finish and then to see the guests’ smiles on their faces once they arrive.
What do you love most about your job?
For me I’ve been very lucky to call the Madikwe game reserve my home since I was a youngster and it is so amazing to be able to tell people our story and get them to experience it for themselves . From the incredible sightings and experiences we’ve been able to do and to make a memory that lasts a lifetime for friends and families that take the plunge to visit us, makes everyday worth it!
What are the challenges of your role?
I think what’s great about the hospitality industry is that every day brings new challenges, it definitely keeps you on your toes. But in saying that the biggest challenge is the consistent need to stay relevant in an always changing market. We can’t rely on what worked 2 years ago to continue working going ahead, hence we are always looking at new ways and experiences to add to our offering so that we can stay at the top of people’s minds.
What do you wish the travel industry did more of?
Marketing South Africa – with information and highlights of what makes the country so easily accessible, to travel around and the incredible standards of hospitality & service found throughout the country – from B n B to huge Hotels. Our road & air networks and huge diversity in landscapes/destinations make RSA exceptional and more than a one time wonder. Look for the Hidden Gems and the stories behind them – avoid the well know destinations and landmarks – tell travellers about what REAL experiences they can have.
How can the travel industry work with you?
We are always open to new business and expanding our reach. It is very simple, you are more than welcome to send me an email at sales@jacislodges.co.za and I would be more than happy to set up a meeting and discuss this further.
What is your favourite African experience and why?
This is a tough one, Africa is one of the most incredible places. From the people, landscape, culture I could keep going here! and how these all seamlessly blend together to give you an incredible experience wherever you go. I absolutely love the wildness and beauty of Mozambique and Madagascar. I feel they are one of the last places left with untouched coastlines for Kilometers for you to enjoy alone.
Where is your next African adventure to?
I’m always looking at things to do with friends or family and one thing that is a guaranteed win is a catamaran trip in Madagascar. There is nothing better than being on the open water in such a pristine location. The benefit of a catamaran is spending every night in a different location and exploring different islands, fauna and flora that I am not used to seeing in Southern Africa.
What are your top tips for travelling Africa?
I’m a big believer in getting in touch with someone that is actually from the area you are looking at. Local knowledge for me is gold! Someone who lives in an area always knows the off the beaten track places and experiences that are exceptional and authentic.
