Kenya welcomes Crystal Symphony cruise

Kenya has welcomed another major cruise liner to its shores, with the luxury vessel MV Crystal Symphony docking at the Port of Mombasa on 31 March 2025, further cementing the country’s position as an emerging cruise destination in East Africa.

Mombasa welcomes 600 new cruise visitors

Carrying 600 passengers, Crystal Symphony’s arrival follows the recent docking of the Norwegian Dawn in February, the largest cruise ship to ever visit Kenya. The growing interest from international cruise lines reflects Kenya’s increasing appeal on the global cruise circuit.

Passengers disembarking in Mombasa were treated to a range of curated excursions including wildlife safaris in Tsavo National Park, cultural tours of Mombasa Old Town and Fort Jesus, and local shopping experiences.

Cruise tourism central to Kenya’s growth strategy

“The arrival of Crystal Symphony is a testament to Kenya’s growing appeal in the global cruise market,” said Kenya Tourism Board CEO June Chepkemei.

“Cruise tourism is a key pillar of our strategy to diversify tourism offerings, create economic opportunities and showcase Kenya’s tourist attractions.”

Kenya’s Cruise Tourism Strategy includes strengthening ties with cruise operators, improving port infrastructure, and ensuring seamless shore experiences for international passengers. The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) continues to promote the country through global trade events such as Seatrade Cruise Global.

Positive outlook for 2025 cruise season

Local government officials expressed optimism for the year ahead, with projections indicating cruise arrivals in 2025 may exceed figures from the past two years. Mombasa’s strategic location, cultural diversity, and proximity to wildlife-rich national parks provide a compelling proposition for cruise itineraries seeking authentic, off-the-beaten-path experiences.
