Lodge Review: Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge

Tucked within the heart of South Africa’s Sabi Sand Game Reserve, adjacent to the renowned Kruger National Park, Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge offers an unparalleled safari experience. This eco-conscious retreat is celebrated for its innovative design that harmoniously integrates with the natural surroundings, providing guests with both opulence and an authentic connection to the African bush.

Established in December 2002, the lodge was conceived as part of Sabi Sabi’s “Tomorrow” philosophy, aiming to redefine the safari experience through innovative architecture and environmental sensitivity.

The lodge’s design draws inspiration from ancient earth shelter architecture, seamlessly integrating with the surrounding landscape. Constructed using natural materials like straw, stone, and pigment blended into cement plaster, Earth Lodge virtually disappears into the earth, offering guests an immersive connection with nature.

Beyond its architectural marvels, Earth Lodge embodies Sabi Sabi’s commitment to conservation and community engagement. The lodge operates with a deep respect for the environment, ensuring minimal impact on the surrounding ecosystem. This dedication to sustainability, combined with unparalleled luxury, positions Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge as a pioneering force in eco-tourism and a beacon for future safari experiences.

The Lodge

Upon arrival, I am greeted by the lovely Marco and Patty, their relaxed welcome instantly making me feel at home. At first, I see nothing but African landscape and think to myself, where is the lodge? Earth Lodge reveals itself subtly, carved into a slope of the earth, making it virtually invisible in the landscape.

Walking down the path to the main foyer, the lodge becomes anything but invisible. The grandeur of the main lobby opens out to what I can only describe as the feeling of an underground lair. Hidden from the outside but once inside, magnificent in how it blends into the surroundings.

The sound of running water from a waterfall cascading off the roof and into a small waterhole below is soothing and creates instant ambience. I have to pinch myself to remind me I am not in a dream. I have never seen a lodge like it in Africa before and it quickly moves to my favourite, without even seeing the rooms.

The architecture employs texture, light, and space to create a sanctuary that is both luxurious and environmentally sensitive. Natural materials and wooden sculptures by South African artist Geoffrey Armstrong adorn the interiors, enhancing the organic aesthetic. It is like a living gallery that ignites the senses.

The lodge comprises 13 ultra-luxurious suites, including the Amber Villa, a stunning private Villa tucked at the edge of the lodge in the heart of the bushveld. My luxury suite featured individually designed furniture, a private plunge pool, en-suite glass-fronted bathroom, and both indoor and outdoor showers.

A bar area was fully stocked with beverages and snacks, all included in the price of the suite. A welcome gift of a cookbook thoughtfully placed on the bed was my first delightful surprise, followed by an art set that I was eager to use, capturing my views out to the bush and waterhole below with paints.

Even from the suite you can see and hear the wildlife, as the outdoor patio area extended unfenced into the wilderness and down to a water hole where hippo could be heard in what I can only describe as gleeful laughing snorts.

Guests staying in the Amber Villa will also enjoy their own private game vehicle, knowledgeable ranger and experienced tracker. This allows for safari adventures to be tailored to their preferences and interests to enjoy lifetime encounters with some of the world’s richest diversity of habitat and wildlife.

The staff at Earth Lodge are renowned for their warm hospitality and attention to detail and this is what really elevates the experience. From the moment of arrival, I was greeted with genuine smiles and personalized service. The rangers and trackers are highly knowledgeable, ensuring memorable wildlife encounters, while the lodge team caters to every comfort, creating a home-away-from-home atmosphere.

The dining

Dining at Earth Lodge is a culinary journey that reflects the lodge’s commitment to excellence and its surroundings. Meals are inspired by nature and prepared to global luxury standards. Breakfasts feature fresh smoothies, fruit, pastries, and locally-inspired hot dishes. Lunches offer a range of light and substantial delights, while high tea includes a selection of cakes, delicacies, and savoury treats. Dinners are gourmet affairs with fusion-style courses served with aesthetic flair.

Unique dining experiences include meals served under the stars in the outdoor boma, private dinners in the subterranean wine cellar surrounded by over 6,000 bottles, and the ‘day bar’ where guests can enjoy lunch with their feet in ankle-deep water while watching wildlife at the nearby waterhole.

Activities

Each day at Earth Lodge began before the sun had even risen, with a gentle knock at the door and a quick coffee and rusks to enjoy in the early morning hush. By 6:30am, I was climbing into the open safari vehicle with our guide Jamel and tracker Louie—two of the most knowledgeable and passionate wildlife professionals I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. Jamel’s storytelling brought every creature and landscape to life, while Louie’s ability to read the bush was nothing short of extraordinary. Together, they tracked a pride of lions through mopane thickets, led us to a female leopard resting in the crook of a marula tree, and introduced us to a large bull elephant that calmly passed within metres of our vehicle.

In the late afternoons, we’d head out again as the golden light painted the bushveld in warm tones. These drives often ended with sundowners in spectacular spots—one evening beside a waterhole where hippos surfaced to snort and splash as we sipped G&Ts. Between drives, the lodge offered serene downtime. I indulged in a moment of serenity on the patio of my suite and a refreshing dip in the plunge pool while the sounds of the bush formed a natural soundtrack. For those feeling more active, there was a well-equipped gym with views of the surrounding savannah. At Earth Lodge, even the quiet moments are rich with the rhythm of the wild.
