Sungulwane Private Game Lodge is the kind of safari stay that quietly gets under your skin. Hidden in a Red Ivory forest in northern Zululand, the lodge feels intimate, deeply personal and wonderfully removed from the rush of everyday life.
With just eight suites overlooking an unbroken sweep of wilderness, it has a more exclusive, slow-paced feel than a larger safari lodge, and that sense of stillness is part of its charm.
What struck me most was the atmosphere. There is luxury here, but it is not loud or overdone. Instead, Sungulwane leans into calm, connection and a real sense of place. Birdsong filters through the trees, the forest wraps around the lodge, and the day naturally falls into the rhythm of game drives, long meals and quiet moments on your deck. It feels more like a private retreat in the bush than a conventional lodge stay.

Location is a major part of the appeal. Sungulwane sits on Zuka Private Game Reserve within the 30,000-hectare Munyawana Big 5 Conservancy in KwaZulu-Natal, a wildlife-rich region known for its biodiversity, strong rhino populations and excellent cheetah sightings. It feels remote, yet it is still relatively easy to access, sitting around 10km off the N2 and roughly 1.5 hours from Richards Bay Airport.
The Lodge

Sungulwane suits travellers who want a more intimate safari experience rather than a large, busy lodge environment. It is ideal for couples, honeymooners, wildlife lovers and small groups, but it is also family-friendly, with dedicated Family Suites and policies in place for children.
Facilities are deliberately low-key and experience-led rather than resort-style. This is not a lodge built around pools, conference facilities or sprawling public areas. Instead, the focus is on the safari itself, supported by thoughtful hospitality, all-inclusive dining, a photographic hide, guided bush walks, in-room spa treatments and lantern-lit boma dinners under the stars. There is also a strong conservation focus running through the property, which gives the stay more depth and purpose.
For guests wanting a safari stay that feels personal, uncrowded and connected to the landscape, that approach works beautifully. Sungulwane is less about ticking off facilities and more about delivering an immersive bush experience with a polished sense of comfort.
Rooms

I stayed in one of the Luxury Suites, and it was exactly what I hoped for in a safari lodge room. Spacious, air-conditioned and raised into the tree canopy, it felt immersed in the bush while still offering every comfort I needed. The floor-to-ceiling glass stack-back doors were a standout, opening up the suite to wide valley views and making the wilderness feel close at all times.
The suite is designed to balance comfort with calm, and that comes through in the details. It is the kind of room where you can wake to birdsong, sit quietly with coffee on your deck and feel fully absorbed in the setting without sacrificing the luxuries of a high-end lodge.
Other room types available at the property include the Family Suite, which accommodates up to four guests and includes a main bedroom with a king-size bed, a second twin room, air-conditioning and ceiling fans, a spacious bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers and bathtubs, and a private veranda overlooking the valley. It is a smart option for families wanting the same safari feel with more room to spread out.
Dining

Dining at Sungulwane is woven into the rhythm of the safari experience. Rates include all meals, selected local beverages and those all-important moments in between, which means food is not simply a convenience here, but a key part of the stay.
Meals are built around fresh, locally sourced ingredients, with the lodge highlighting breakfast, lunch and dinner as integral to the guest experience. The culinary team, led by chefs Hlengiwe, Makhosi and Ray, crafts a menu that is contemporary but grounded in place. The style feels warm and thoughtful rather than formal, which suits the atmosphere of the lodge perfectly.
There are also some memorable safari-style touches, including lantern-lit boma dinners under the night sky, fresh seasonal breakfasts, sharing platters, baked treats and homemade chocolates. The lodge also caters for dietary requirements, which is a welcome plus. I could not verify exact meal service times on the public site, so those are best confirmed directly with the lodge when booking.
Wildlife experience and game drives

This is where Sungulwane really shines. The lodge offers twice-daily game drives through the Munyawana Conservancy, where guests have the chance to encounter the Big 5 as well as cheetah, zebra, giraffe and prolific birdlife across six distinct biomes. What I like about the experience is that it sounds unhurried, allowing the landscape and wildlife to reveal themselves rather than turning each drive into a race for sightings.
Beyond the drives, there are guided bush walks and a ground-level photographic hide, which offers an eye-level perspective on visiting wildlife. That hide feels like one of the lodge’s most distinctive features, particularly for keen photographers and guests wanting a quieter, more contemplative wildlife experience.
For guests wanting something even more meaningful, Sungulwane also offers rhino conservation encounters when operations allow. These must be arranged well in advance and are subject to availability, but they add another layer to the safari experience by connecting guests with the reserve’s conservation work.
Top tip

Book a Luxury Suite with time to spare between game drives so you can fully enjoy the private deck and the forest setting. Also make time for the photographic hide, as it offers a completely different wildlife perspective from the game vehicle and is one of the lodge’s most memorable experiences.
