Manta Resort relaunches underwater room experience in Pemba

The Manta Resort on Pemba Island has relaunched its signature underwater room, marking the third iteration of one of Africa’s most distinctive accommodation experiences.

Located off Tanzania’s Pemba Island, the redesigned structure sits just offshore, offering a multi-level stay that combines ocean views above and below the surface.

Underwater suite reopens with upgraded design

The updated underwater room features a submerged bedroom positioned four metres below sea level, with expanded windows delivering a 360-degree view of the surrounding reef.

Above the water, guests have access to a rooftop deck and a sea-level lounge, creating a three-tiered experience that transitions from open ocean views to an immersive marine environment.

At night, underwater lighting attracts marine life, enhancing wildlife viewing directly from the bedroom.

Experience linked to marine conservation

The relaunch also reinforces the property’s conservation focus, with proceeds from the underwater room directed towards marine protection initiatives in the Pemba Channel.

Funding supports community engagement, research and the management of marine protected areas, aligning the guest experience with conservation outcomes.

Niche product for high-value travellers

For the trade, the underwater room offers a unique, high-end add-on for East Africa itineraries, particularly when combined with mainland safari experiences.

As demand grows for experiential travel, distinctive accommodation such as this continues to play a role in differentiating Indian Ocean extensions within broader African journeys.
