Meetings Africa economic impact

The impact of Meetings Africa over the past 18 years has been “profound” and the 19th annual event is expected to pay even higher dividends, according to Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille in her keynote address during the official launch of Meetings Africa 2025 at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange yesterday.

Meetings Africa 2025 is scheduled for February 24-26 at the Sandton Convention Centre. According to an economic impact assessment commissioned by South African Tourism, total direct expenditure in South Africa generated by last year’s Meetings Africa is an estimated R145 million – 13 per cent up from R128 million in 2023. Patricia de Lille pointed out that the objective of shows like Meetings Africa is to ensure Africa gets its fair share of the business events market.

“In the same spirit, Meetings Africa 2025 will highlight the economic benefits of the MICE industry – positioning the event as a driver of investment, innovation and job creation throughout Africa, ” Patricia de Lille added.

SA’s George records a strong festive season with events

The Garden Route town of George celebrated a busy festive season with vibrant events, increased visitor engagement and significant revenue growth across its tourism sector. From December 11 to January 12, the city recorded R51.7 million (€2 652 210) in revenue, reflecting 28 per cent year-on-year growth, according to aggregated data from leading online travel agent platforms.

The George, Wilderness and Uniondale visitor information centres extended their hours and assisted over 272 visitors with activity bookings, accommodation queries and brochures. Convention bureaus leveraged to grow MICE in East Africa

According to International Meetings Statistics Report 2023, an average of over 10 000 association meetings were held across various countries and continents last year. Africa currently hosts only 2 per cent of global association meetings with South Africa hosting the largest number (93), followed by Rwanda (around 32).

Kenya hosted 29 meetings, ranking it 60th globally. This highlights Africa’s need to tap into this sector, which surpassed pre-pandemic levels last year, faster than previously predicted, to reach a record US$1.5 trillion, according to the latest report from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). Countries in East Africa are working towards establishing strong national convention bureaus to tap into this revenue and diversify their tourism products.
