MSC Euribia, MSC Cruises’ flagship vessel, made waves last week as it docked at Durban’s Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal, officially becoming the largest ship to ever call at a South African port.
This grand vessel, with a capacity for 6,334 passengers, also stands as one of the fleet’s most advanced in terms of technology and environmental sustainability.
Ross Volk, Managing Director of MSC Cruises South Africa, praised the terminal’s facilities, noting that Durban is one of only two South African ports, alongside Cape Town, equipped to accommodate a ship of Euribia’s magnitude. “This marks the official start of the local cruise season, and we’re thrilled to welcome both seasoned cruisers and newcomers throughout the summer,” Volk said. He added that MSC Musica will commence its South African service on November 22, providing additional options for the upcoming season.
MSC Euribia is notable for its eco-conscious approach, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), which cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent and significantly reduces local pollutants like sulphur and particulate emissions. Volk highlighted MSC Cruises’ ambitious sustainability goals, including becoming the first carbon-neutral cruise line by 2050.
“We’re well on our way, having reduced carbon emissions by nearly 40 per cent as of our last sustainability report,” Volk noted.
Euribia also made history as the first cruise ship to complete a carbon-neutral journey from its construction port to Copenhagen, achieved through carbon offset credits.
With 2,400 cabins, Euribia offers guests a luxurious experience, including a nearly 100-metre LED ceiling along its indoor promenade, 10 dining venues, 21 bars, five pools, and an expansive waterpark. For those seeking ultimate exclusivity, the MSC Yacht Club provides privacy, 24-hour butler service, and other high-end amenities, ensuring an experience as grand as the vessel itself.
For South Africa’s ports and the cruise community, MSC Euribia’s arrival underscores MSC Cruises’ commitment to sustainability and innovation in ocean travel, setting a precedent for environmentally conscious cruising in Africa.
