A sanctuary of silence and stargazing in the heart of the desert, Namibia’s NamibRand Nature Reserve has earned the prestigious title of Africa’s first Wilderness Quiet Park.

This accolade, awarded by Quiet Parks International, recognizes NamibRand for its unwavering commitment to preserving one of the continent’s most pristine desert habitats. It highlights NamibRand as a sanctuary of solitude in a world where quiet places are rapidly disappearing.

Spanning over 200,000 hectares adjacent to the Namib-Naukluft National Park and the Namib Sand Sea World Heritage Site, NamibRand is a haven for both wildlife and visitors seeking peace and tranquillity.

The reserve’s untouched desert landscapes offer an ideal setting for stargazing and were recognised in May 2012 as a Gold Tier International Dark Sky Reserve, acknowledging its efforts to protect the night sky and the habitats that depend on it.

Nils Odendaal, CEO of NamibRand Nature Reserve, expressed pride in the new designation: “This accolade underscores our dedication to preserving the tranquillity of NamibRand and promoting responsible tourism practices. We hope this designation will inspire others to appreciate and conserve our natural world.”

Quiet Parks International field recordist Edward Alant, who was captivated by the serenity of the reserve, recommended NamibRand to anyone in search of a peaceful retreat. “A Wilderness Quiet Park award symbolises the effort expended by the owners and management of NamibRand to preserve the integrity of the natural ecosystem,” Alant noted.

Matt Mikkelsen, Executive Director of Wilderness Quiet Parks, emphasised that the award reinforces NamibRand’s commitment to safeguarding the natural soundscape and fostering a deeper connection to nature.

Since its inception in 1994, NamibRand has championed responsible tourism by limiting guest accommodations—there are only six intimate camps within the reserve—and restricting development to ensure minimal environmental impact. This careful approach not only protects the natural landscape but also preserves the tranquil soundscapes that make NamibRand a unique and vital wilderness sanctuary.

NamibRand’s designation as a Wilderness Quiet Park is a testament to the reserve’s role as a leader in conservation. It offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience the desert’s silence and splendour in its purest form.
