Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge, inside South Africa’s Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, is highlighting how guest stays directly fund the park’s anti-poaching operations, ahead of World Rhino Day on 22 September. The park, where every southern white rhino traces its lineage, has recorded a 52 per cent reduction in rhino poaching this year, giving advisors a strong conservation story to pair with a Big Five safari product in KwaZulu-Natal.
Guest fees fund rangers, fencing and canine units

Guests pay park entrance fees to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, with a significant proportion directed to conservation initiatives, and contribute separately through the Isibindi Foundation levy, which funds community and conservation projects in partnership with the lodge. These funds support ranger patrols, smart-fencing technology and the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife K9 unit.
The lodge is staffed largely by people from the neighbouring Mpembeni community, reflecting a model that links conservation, community and tourism directly rather than treating them as separate initiatives.
Black rhino conservation faces different challenges

The park has partnered with the WWF Black Rhino Range Expansion Project, which addresses habitat limitations for the species by identifying suitable land and establishing new populations through managed translocations. Black rhinos are browsers favouring dense vegetation, making them harder to monitor and protect than white rhinos, which graze in more open terrain; protection methods include ranger patrols, aerial surveillance, horseback patrols and specialist canine teams.
