Two crew members have died following the derailment of a Rovos Rail passenger train near Keetmanshoop in southern Namibia in the early hours of 1 March 2026.
According to reporting by The Namibian, the luxury train was travelling southbound from Windhoek when it derailed near Naute, approximately 285 kilometres from Ariamsvlei and the South African border. The incident occurred at approximately 04:45.
In a statement issued on 1 March 2026, Rovos Rail confirmed the cause of the accident was a washaway of the last span of a bridge, which resulted in the loss of two locomotives and two utility coaches. The company said the train’s automatic brake system activated, bringing the train to a stop and preventing further damage.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of our Rovos Driver and the TransNamib Pilot,” the company said.
“We extend our deepest condolences to their families, friends and colleagues.”
No passenger injuries reported
Rovos Rail confirmed that no passengers or other staff members were injured in the derailment.
Buses were arranged to transport guests to Upington in South Africa, from where they were scheduled to be flown to Cape Town. The company said guests would be met personally on arrival.
“We sincerely regret this occurrence but rest assured, the safety and well-being of our guests and staff is paramount,” the statement said.
The communications team, including senior representatives, remains on hand to manage the response and assist affected travellers.
The derailment has sent shockwaves through the luxury rail sector, with Rovos Rail regarded as one of Africa’s most prestigious train operators, offering high-end itineraries across southern Africa.
Authorities are expected to investigate the bridge failure and surrounding circumstances.
