Rovos Rail has launched a new 16-night itinerary, the Malawi Meander, expanding its portfolio of luxury rail journeys with a multi-country route spanning southern Africa.
The new journey will operate in 2027 and 2028, travelling between Pretoria and Lilongwe and crossing South Africa, Eswatini, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
New itinerary opens emerging destinations

The Malawi Meander introduces Malawi and Mozambique as key highlights within a broader rail and touring experience, signalling growing interest in lesser-visited destinations across the region.
While parts of the Malawi sector were initially planned by rail, the current itinerary incorporates flights due to ongoing access constraints on local rail infrastructure. Rovos Rail confirmed it will continue to explore future rail access options.
For the trade, the inclusion of Malawi – still a relatively under-sold destination in the Australian market – presents new opportunities to diversify southern Africa itineraries.
Blended rail and land experience

The journey combines Rovos Rail’s traditional luxury train experience with off-train excursions and lodge stays across multiple destinations.
Highlights include game drives in Kruger National Park and Liwonde National Park, cultural visits in Eswatini, and touring key heritage sites such as the Great Zimbabwe Monument.
Guests will also visit Mozambique’s coastal city of Beira, explore Maputo, and enjoy a lakeside retreat on Lake Malawi, adding a strong mix of wildlife, culture and scenery.
Premium positioning targets high-value travellers

The itinerary is priced from US$18,200 per person twin share for 2027 departures, positioning it firmly in the high-end experiential travel segment.
Accommodation options range from Pullman Gold Suites through to Royal Suites, aligning with Rovos Rail’s established luxury offering.
For agents, the product provides a differentiated rail-based alternative to traditional fly-in safari itineraries, appealing to clients seeking slower, more immersive travel across multiple countries.
Growing demand for multi-country journeys
The launch reflects broader demand for longer, more complex itineraries that combine several destinations into a single trip, particularly among repeat Africa travellers.
By linking established safari regions with emerging destinations, the Malawi Meander offers a new way to package southern Africa beyond the traditional South Africa–Victoria Falls circuit.
As interest in experiential and rail travel continues to grow, products such as this are likely to play an increasing role in attracting high-yield travellers to the region.
