Rwanda is preparing to host the 20th edition of its landmark Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony on 5 September 2025. Held in the foothills of Volcanoes National Park in Kinigi, the event celebrates the country’s world-renowned conservation efforts and is now a highlight on the global ecotourism calendar.
This year, a record 40 baby mountain gorillas will be officially named, born to groups protected within the national park over the past year. Since the event’s inception in 2005, nearly 400 gorillas have been named, each one a symbol of the country’s success in conservation and community-based tourism.
A celebration of conservation and culture
The 2025 theme, “A legacy of community-centred conservation, securing a sustainable future for all”, highlights the combined efforts of local communities, rangers, researchers and conservation organisations. It also reflects Rwanda’s longstanding approach to wildlife preservation, placing communities at the heart of its tourism strategy.
The ceremony forms part of a broader series of events, including cultural performances, community project inaugurations, sporting activities and a conservation-themed gala in Kigali. These events are designed to further strengthen community ties and celebrate Rwanda’s environmental achievements on a global stage.
A unique lens into Rwandan life
For visitors, Kwita Izina offers more than a ceremonial spectacle. It is an immersive experience that reflects the deep connection between the people of Rwanda and the natural world. From traditional naming customs to modern conservation technologies, the event provides a rare insight into the intersection of heritage and sustainability.
Travel agents and tour operators attending the event can also participate in guided familiarisation tours, offering valuable exposure to Rwanda’s tourism offerings—from its iconic gorilla treks to its growing luxury hospitality sector.
Opportunity for the Australian travel trade
For the Australian travel industry, Kwita Izina offers a compelling hook for clients seeking immersive and meaningful travel. Gorilla trekking in Rwanda has long been considered a bucket-list experience, and the naming ceremony adds another layer of connection, education and authenticity.
With its well-developed tourism infrastructure, conservation-led ethos and welcoming visa policies, Rwanda is well-positioned to grow its share of the Australian long-haul travel market. Kwita Izina provides a timely opportunity for agents to introduce clients to a destination that seamlessly blends nature, culture and conservation.
