South Africa rolls out digital traveller declaration for all arrivals and departures

South Africa has formally launched its digital traveller declaration system, requiring all passengers entering or leaving the country to complete a customs form via the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

The move replaces paper-based declarations with the South African Traveller Management System (SATMS), part of a broader push to streamline border processing and improve compliance.

Mandatory online process within 24 hours of travel

Under the new system, travellers must submit their declaration within 24 hours before departure or arrival into South Africa. The form captures key details including personal information, travel plans, goods carried and any currency exceeding thresholds.

Once submitted, travellers receive a digital confirmation via email or SMS, which must be presented at customs on arrival or departure.

The official portal is now live and accessible here:

No change to duty rules, but stricter compliance

While the process has shifted online, existing customs regulations remain unchanged.

Travellers are still required to declare goods exceeding duty-free allowances, restricted or prohibited items, and cash or negotiable instruments above ZAR 100,000. Personal effects for private use generally remain exempt within standard thresholds.

The digital system is designed to improve transparency and reduce processing times, particularly during peak travel periods.

What it means for the travel trade

For agents, the update is largely procedural but important to communicate clearly to clients ahead of departure.

Travellers without access to a device can still complete the declaration at ports of entry using self-service kiosks or with assistance from officials, meaning the rollout is not expected to disrupt travel.

The shift aligns South Africa with a growing number of destinations moving to digital border processes, reinforcing the importance of pre-departure preparation as part of the travel experience.
