South Africa to launch digital visa system by September

South Africa’s fully digital electronic travel authorisation (ETA) system is set to launch by the end of September, streamlining short-term visa applications for tourists visiting the country. The announcement came from the Minister of Home Affairs, Leon Schreiber, who confirmed that the new system will apply to stays of up to 90 days and forms part of the government’s broader plan to digitise visa and border processes.

Initially revealed by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his February State of the Nation Address, the ETA will be managed by the Border Management Authority and introduced at major international airports.

Real-time processing with AI and enhanced security

The ETA platform will use artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor applications in real time, aiming to reduce fraud and improve processing efficiency. Minister Schreiber noted that the system includes advanced cybersecurity measures and AI-powered risk engines, with applications expected to be processed within hours.

A recent live demonstration for President Ramaphosa reportedly ran smoothly, with further testing and refinement ongoing ahead of the official rollout.

Details pending on eligible nationalities

While the list of eligible nationalities remains under wraps, Schreiber confirmed that it will be revealed at the time of the launch.

“It would be premature to discuss the finer details as this will all be revealed at the go-live launch in September,” he said.

Tourism industry support expected

The Department of Home Affairs has expressed its willingness to work closely with tourism stakeholders to promote the ETA internationally.

“We believe this is a game changer for the tourism industry,” Schreiber said, highlighting collaboration opportunities with the Department of Tourism and South African Tourism.
