The South African Film Festival (SAFF) 2026 is now underway across Australia and New Zealand, bringing a curated program of contemporary South African cinema to trade audiences and consumers through both in-cinema screenings and an online platform.
Running from 21 June to 26 July, the festival features 33 films spanning documentaries, feature films and shorts, with a hybrid format designed to extend reach across multiple markets.
Hybrid format expands audience reach
Screenings are taking place in key cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Auckland, supported by an online program available to audiences across both countries from 26 June.
The format reflects a broader shift towards hybrid cultural events, allowing tourism and cultural organisations to engage wider audiences beyond traditional city-based screenings.
Program highlights showcase contemporary storytelling
The 2026 program includes a mix of award-winning and commercially successful titles, with the closing gala in Sydney featuring “Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight”, directed by Embeth Davidtz.
Other highlights include “The Heart Is a Muscle”, South Africa’s 2025 Academy Awards submission, wildlife documentary “Pangolin: Journey to Freedom”, and box-office success “My F*k, Marelize!”.
The program also features music and performance-led content, including a filmed production of Verdi’s “AIDA” with an all-South African cast.
Cultural events support destination awareness
For the travel trade, the festival provides a platform to showcase South Africa’s creative industries and cultural narratives to Australian and New Zealand audiences.
As demand grows for experience-led travel, cultural events such as film festivals continue to play a role in influencing destination awareness and inspiring future travel to the region.
