Time + Tide has completed a significant refurbishment of Kakuli, its seasonal safari camp overlooking the Luangwa River in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park.
The camp reopened in June following annual rebuilding works, with this year’s redevelopment prompted by changes to the riverbank after a particularly strong green season. The refurbishment includes redesigned guest rooms, upgraded amenities and refreshed interiors while retaining the camp’s established character and connection to the surrounding wilderness.
Refurbishment balances heritage and modern comfort

Kakuli’s updated accommodation has been repositioned slightly further from the river’s edge following seasonal changes to the landscape.
The camp’s traditional design elements, including thatched roofs, wooden floors and grass walls sourced from the surrounding environment, have been retained. New design features draw inspiration from local communities in the South Luangwa region, introducing contemporary patterns and textures while preserving the camp’s established aesthetic.
Guest rooms now feature floor-to-ceiling stacking glass doors opening onto covered outdoor seating areas, alongside enhanced bathroom facilities that include outdoor baths and indoor and outdoor showers.
Prime base for walking and wildlife safaris

Located above the Luangwa River, Kakuli continues to offer access to some of South Luangwa National Park’s most sought-after wildlife experiences.
The area is known for regular sightings of lions and leopards, while seasonal birdlife includes large colonies of carmine bee-eaters and opportunities to spot the elusive Pel’s fishing owl.
The camp also maintains its connection to the legacy of Norman Carr, the conservationist and safari pioneer widely credited with developing Zambia’s walking safari experience.
Growing appeal for high-end safari travellers

The refurbishment comes as demand continues to grow for authentic safari experiences that combine strong wildlife viewing with low-density accommodation and a sense of place.
With a limited number of safari rooms and a focus on personalised experiences, Kakuli remains positioned within the premium safari segment while offering direct access to one of Africa’s most celebrated wilderness destinations.
The updated camp reinforces Time + Tide’s investment in Zambia’s safari sector and strengthens South Luangwa’s appeal among international travellers seeking immersive wildlife experiences.
