A&K Sanctuary opens Kitirua Plains Lodge in Amboseli

Abercrombie & Kent’s A&K Sanctuary has opened Kitirua Plains Lodge in Kenya’s Amboseli, marking a significant expansion of its East Africa portfolio and reinforcing demand for high-end safari product in the region.

The 13-suite lodge sits on a private concession bordering Amboseli National Park, offering a lower-density alternative to the main reserve.

New luxury lodge strengthens Kenya circuit

The opening completes A&K Sanctuary’s three-property circuit in Kenya, linking Amboseli with the Maasai Mara and Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

Located in a wildlife-rich ecosystem known for large elephant herds and views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the lodge is positioned to attract premium travellers seeking exclusive access with fewer vehicles.

Game drives operate across both the private concession and the wider Amboseli ecosystem, with additional experiences including hot air ballooning available.

Design and sustainability central to development

Kitirua Plains Lodge represents a shift in design approach for A&K Sanctuary, moving beyond traditional tented camps to a more permanent, architecture-led concept.

The lodge has been built using locally sourced materials, with structures designed to blend into the surrounding landscape. Operations are primarily solar-powered, supporting a low-impact footprint.

Each suite features indoor and outdoor bathrooms, private verandas and views across the plains, with larger two-bedroom options catering to families and small groups.

Wellness and community engagement in focus

The property includes a wellness offering developed in partnership with Healing Earth, incorporating treatments inspired by local Maasai traditions.

Community engagement forms a key part of the project, with A&K Philanthropy supporting local education initiatives, including the development of a new pre-school scheduled for completion in August 2026.

Trade opportunity in high-end safari segment

Nightly rates start from USD840 per person, including meals, beverages, game drives and transfers, positioning the lodge within the upper luxury segment.

For the Australian trade, the opening adds new inventory in a well-established destination, supporting multi-stop Kenya itineraries that combine wildlife, conservation and cultural experiences.
