Hapag-Lloyd expands Cape Town cruise programme with 2027 Europa sailings

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises will expand its Southern Africa deployment in late 2027, with a series of Europa sailings to and from Cape Town, reinforcing the port’s role as a key hub in global luxury cruise itineraries.

Cape Town strengthens position as cruise hub

The programme begins with a 12-night repositioning voyage from Tenerife to Cape Town departing 6 November 2027, before transitioning into regional itineraries.

From 18 November 2027, Europa will operate a 15-night roundtrip from Cape Town, calling at Lüderitz and Walvis Bay in Namibia, alongside South African ports including Port Elizabeth, Durban and Mossel Bay. The routing combines desert landscapes with established coastal destinations, offering a diverse regional circuit.

For the trade, the inclusion of both turnaround and transit calls highlights Cape Town’s growing strategic importance in cruise deployment.

Indian Ocean routing adds multi-region appeal

A subsequent 15-night voyage departing 3 December 2027 will connect Cape Town with Mauritius, incorporating stops along South Africa’s east coast before crossing to Indian Ocean islands.

Ports include Richard’s Bay, Fort Dauphin in Madagascar and Saint-Denis in Réunion, reflecting a broader trend towards itineraries that link mainland Africa with island destinations in a single journey.

Luxury cruise segment targets high-value travellers

Europa accommodates fewer than 400 guests, positioning it within the luxury segment, with a focus on longer stays in port and smaller-scale shore experiences.

The deployment aligns with a wider industry trend of using boutique ships on extended, multi-region itineraries, appealing to experienced travellers seeking more in-depth exploration.

For Australian agents, the programme offers opportunities to package Southern Africa with Atlantic and Indian Ocean cruising, catering to clients looking for longer, destination-rich journeys.

As cruise lines continue to diversify beyond traditional routes, Southern Africa is gaining traction as a key region for premium, small-ship itineraries.
