On World Ranger Day, safari lodges and conservation stakeholders across southern and East Africa are paying tribute not only to the brave individuals safeguarding the region’s invaluable natural assets but also to their loyal canine companions.
Observed annually on 31 July, World Ranger Day commemorates rangers who have been injured or killed in the line of duty and acknowledges the vital role they play in protecting the planet’s natural treasures and cultural heritage.
This year’s theme, “30 by 30,” aligns with the 2022 United Nations Conference on Biological Diversity (COP 15) framework, aiming for at least 30% of the planet to be effectively conserved and managed by 2030.
The day celebrates the exceptional individuals whose multifaceted roles include anti-poaching, monitoring, education, community support, and enforcing sustainable resource use. Alongside these human heroes, recognition is also given to the four-legged champions in K9 anti-poaching units throughout the region.
In South Africa, Hill’s Pet Nutrition has been a staunch supporter of K9 anti-poaching units since 2012, providing food, equipment, and healthcare. The crucial contributions of these dogs and their handlers have been showcased through Hill’s “Making Contact” video series.
“The heart-warming series not only recognises the remarkable role these dogs play in protecting our natural heritage but also their incredible handlers who, through their commitment to working with the dogs, are making a real difference in the fight against poaching,” says Guy Fyvie, Veterinary Affairs Manager at Hill’s Pet Nutrition.
A notable success story from Hill’s support is seen at the Manyoni Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal. In 2023, the K9 unit at the 23,000-hectare reserve apprehended six poachers, resulting in no rhino poaching incidents for the entire year. This achievement is significant as KwaZulu-Natal suffered the most from rhino poaching in 2023, with 325 animals lost to poachers.
On World Ranger Day, we salute both the rangers and their canine allies for their relentless dedication to conserving Africa’s natural heritage.
