Rwanda Swiftly contains Marburg outbreak

Rwanda’s government has received widespread praise for its swift and effective response to the country’s first outbreak of the Marburg virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) has advised against implementing travel and trade restrictions, emphasising the minimal risk of infection to travellers.

The outbreak was confirmed by Rwanda’s Ministry of Health on 27 September 2024, with the virus first detected among individuals exposed to fruit bat colonies, the primary carriers. As of 14 October 2024, the Ministry reported 62 confirmed cases, most confined to a hospital cluster in Kigali.

Rapid Response Contained the Outbreak

Rwanda’s government acted swiftly to contain the virus, implementing measures such as isolating and treating all confirmed cases, contact tracing, and widespread testing. The Ministry of Health confirmed that all recent cases were linked to individuals within the Kigali hospital cluster, and there has been no evidence of community transmission.

The WHO commended Rwanda’s efforts in its October 10 advisory, noting the government’s “rapid detection, investigation, isolation, and testing of all suspected cases.” Thanks to these decisive actions, the outbreak remains contained within the hospital network.

No Impact on Travel or Tourism

Rwanda’s tourism industry remains unaffected by the outbreak, with experts underscoring the minimal risk to travellers. Richard Dawood, Medical Advisor to the African Travel & Tourism Association (ATTA), highlighted the highly contained nature of the outbreak and the effective public health measures in place.

“Normal travel activities pose no risk to tourists,” said Dawood. “The outbreak is being closely monitored, and I expect it to be brought to an end swiftly.”

Travellers can continue to enjoy Rwanda’s renowned tourism offerings, including its famous gorilla trekking experiences, without concern. WHO also reaffirmed that no travel restrictions are necessary, emphasising that the situation is well under control.

Rwanda’s prompt and efficient handling of the Marburg virus outbreak serves as a testament to its robust healthcare infrastructure and commitment to maintaining public safety.
