Kenyan airline Skyward Express has celebrated a significant milestone with the launch of its first international flight. The inaugural service connects Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport with Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This marks the airline’s 11th route as it enters its 11th year of operation.

The new route, serviced by a 109-seat Fokker 100 jet, offers passengers a convenient and affordable travel option to one of East Africa’s most vibrant cities, known for its rich cultural heritage, wildlife, and business opportunities.

Expanding Horizons

Skyward Express CEO Mohamed Abdi expressed pride in this milestone, emphasising the airline’s plans for future growth. “I’m excited to announce that this is just the beginning. We will be expanding our routes to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, broadening our horizons and connecting even more travellers in the region,” he said.

Kenyan Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir commended the airline for its role in strengthening regional connectivity and advancing Kenya’s aviation sector. “We celebrate one of our own in a space previously dominated by international carriers. This milestone highlights the potential of Kenya’s transport sector in shaping regional connectivity and economic growth,” he said.

Filling Gaps in East African Aviation

Skyward Express is addressing a critical gap in East African aviation by connecting under-served routes, enhancing accessibility to key business and tourism destinations. Competitive fares for the new route, starting at US$100, aim to make air travel more affordable for a broad spectrum of passengers, from business travellers to tourists.

Despite steady growth in African air travel, with passenger traffic increasing by 6.1 per cent in 2019 according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), East Africa faces unique challenges. Limited infrastructure, high operational costs, and a fragmented market have restricted intra-regional connectivity.

The Future of Regional Connectivity

While East Africa’s aviation sector faces hurdles, milestones like Skyward Express’ international launch highlight the region’s potential. With plans to expand its network and increase regional collaboration, Skyward Express is poised to play a pivotal role in improving connectivity and accessibility within East Africa.
