Adrift River Club and Lemala Wildwaters Lodge have become the first properties in Uganda to receive the prestigious Fair Trade Tourism (FTT) – Engaged Award, marking a new chapter in the country’s sustainable tourism journey.

Leading the way in responsible tourism

This milestone recognizes both lodges for their commitment to fair wages, community engagement, environmental conservation, and cultural preservation. The FTT-Engaged Award is an entry-level certification that evaluates businesses against over 50 criteria, including working conditions, environmental management, and community support.

Lilly Ajarova, CEO of the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), praised this achievement: “This certification demonstrates Uganda’s dedication to empowering local communities and preserving the environment, aligning with the growing global demand for responsible travel experiences.”

Spotlight on the lodges

  • Adrift River Club: Located near Kalagala Falls on the Nile River, this lodge offers thrilling adventures like rafting, kayaking, and birdwatching. Its sustainability efforts include sourcing fresh, sustainably caught fish and paying a premium to local fishermen, benefiting two nearby communities.
  • Lemala Wildwaters Lodge: Situated on a private island in the Nile, this eco-luxury retreat combines natural beauty with community-driven tourism. Guests can enjoy diverse birdlife and outdoor adventures, all while supporting initiatives that ensure tourism benefits are equitably shared with local residents.

A step toward full Fair Trade certification

Rebecca Phillips, Guest Experience Manager for Lemala Camps & Lodges, highlighted the importance of this achievement: “We pride ourselves on our commitment to our places, our people, and our environment wherever we operate. FTT has been an incredible partner in guiding us to this milestone in Uganda.”

Inspiring a sustainable tourism future

As members of Uganda’s Exclusive Sustainable Tour Operators Association (ESTOA), both lodges are setting an example for how sustainability and profitability can coexist. This achievement positions Uganda as a leading destination for eco-conscious travellers, offering authentic, community-driven, and culturally rich experiences.
