If anyone knows Africa, it is Susie Potter from the Africa Safari Co. With over 75 trips to Africa under her hat, she has been in the business of selling African dream trips to travellers for the past 27 years and is still passionate about her role.

And if you have had the opportunity to travel with Susie on a famil, then you know where this passion comes from. Susie is celebrating 35 years in travel this year.

Susie is someone you need to get to know, and here is why.

What is your job description and what does your role involve?

I am the proud Owner and CEO of The Africa Safari Co. A company I personally started back in October 1997. Even after 27 years as CEO I still work in the business on a day to day basis doing everything from quotes, to pricing, from brochures, to groups, accounts, sales, marketing… you name it I have done it and still do it.

Which parts of the travel industry do you work with?

Being a 100% Australian owner Wholesaler we work with the Retail Agents throughout all of Australia. Some agents have been working with for the last 35 years (even in my previous Africa wholesale life) and some are new agent to us. We work closely with our preferred agency network

What do you love most about your job?

Selling, visiting and talking about the best destination on earth – the African continent!
It is so varied and exciting, it offers something for everyone, for every budget, for every taste and every trip (even though I have completed over 75 trips to Africa now) are different.

What are the challenges of your role?

At the moment competing against online operators and companies based in Africa trying to secure direct bookings from the Australian general public. Africa is a destination that requires first hand knowledge and experience. Just because it says it’s a 5 star lodge – doesn’t mean it’s a 5 star lodge. Experience will ensure you have an amazing trip.

What is your favourite African experience and why?

There are way too many to mention – but a recent to visit to Rwanda blew me away. The beauty of the country and the quality of the lodges and the wildlife experience was just mind blowing and having seen A LOT in Africa this destination was very special.

Where is your next African adventure to?

I am currently in Africa experiencing a new ultra luxuy lodge in Botswana, then will travel through Zambia and then take some friends on holiday to Kruger, Vic Falls and East Africa. Then lie on a beach in Zanzibar before taking a small group to Egypt and another to Jordan… so a busy few months coming up !

What are your top tips for travelling Africa?

Don’t pack to much – the laundry service in Africa is amazing. And don’t worry about the food – there is so much variety you will always find plenty to eat. Most importantly, relax and enjoy the experience… nothing better than an afternoon game drive and sundowner in the bush !
